MOTHER TONGUE

MT Department aims to ‘Develop in every SGSians the love for MT language and culture through progressive and innovative teaching’.

Our department is committed to nurture our students to become “active learners and proficient users” （乐学善用）of the Mother Tongue Languages and engages students in learning through various ways, such as games and songs to infuse the Joy of learning, thinking routines like SEE-THINK-WONDER & Circle of viewpoints to enhance their competency in communication. We provide platforms and opportunities for students to know, experience and connect with the language and culture, such as Mother Fortnight, CPES and Xi’An Immersion.

Signature Programmes

MT Language & Cultural Programme enables our students to understand and develop their unique identity through a deeper appreciation of culture, traditions, literature and history.

Festive Celebrations – Lunar New Year, Indian New Year & Hari Raya Celebrations engages students in active and authentic learning experiences.

Language Arts Appreciation provides opportunities for students to use the language in an active and interactive manner e.g.

2018

  •  “Global Village” Children & Youths Bilingual Speech Competition – 2nd Runner Up
  • Newspaper Design Competition organized by Lianhe Zaobao – Lower Secondary group was awarded the “Commendation Award”, while the Upper Secondary group clinched the 3rd Place. The Upper Secondary was also awarded the “Best Title Award” in recognition of the creative and impactful Newspaper title crafted.
  • Malay Writing Competition  (Peraduan Pena Emasku) –  Awarded Gold Grade
  • The Most Inspiring Tamil Teacher Award (Lifetime Achievement) – Mrs Bhupathy

  • Creation of Tamil Apps, organised by CPDD & Bartley Sec School. Came in 3rd
  • Trail shuttle competition, organised by Tamil Language Learning and Promotion Committee (TLLPC) & Crescent Girls’ School. Came in 3rd
  • Impromptu Advertisement Competition, organised by Anglo Chinese Independent. Came in 4th
  • Impromptu speech competition, organised by CPDD. Came in 3rd
  • Oratorical Competition, organised by Tamil Pattimandra Kalai Kazhagam with the support of Tamil Language Council, SINDA and Lamsoon CC IAEC Choa Chu Kang. Two of our students got the consolation prize.
